What is unsupervised learning?

Unsupervised learning gives a model data with no labels and lets it find patterns or groups on its own.

In plain English

There is no answer key. The model looks at lots of data and sorts it by what looks alike. It is like tipping a box of mixed buttons on a table and grouping them by size and colour, without anyone telling you the groups.

An example

An online shop feeds in its customers’ shopping habits. The model finds groups nobody named in advance, such as “weekend bargain hunters” or “new parents”, and the shop shapes its offers around them.

Watch out

The model finds groups, but it can’t tell you what they mean. People still have to decide whether a pattern is useful, or just a coincidence in the data. See supervised learning for the labelled approach.
